BENFICA & BELA GUTTMAN-CURSE OR COMPENSATION?
The World Cup is here. All the teams’ coaches are fine-tuning their strategies with the aim of winning games and be the only country to lift the prestigious trophy. Life, itself is like a world cup, and we all compete for personal and public victory. It is impossible to win in football and in life without being intentional.
What’s your game plan for life? I want you to compete and win. You must compete with yourself and conquer before anything is given to you. The private victory precedes the public victory. Have you heard of the 52years old curse on Benfica Football Club in Portugal? There is a lesson for you in this true story of how a man, Bela Guttman placed a 100 years curse on an organization. Is this a curse or compensation?
Bela coached Benfica in 1959, won the Portuguese league twice and the European Cup twice in 1960 and 1961. He after these consecutive successes, requested for a pay rise. Rather than being given a rise as reward for his results, he was dismissed by the club’s executive. He in annoyance placed a curse on the club. He said “Benfica will not win any European Cup for the next 100years”. Bela died in 1981 at the age of 82.
In the 52nd year, the club lost eight final matches in Europe, including the recent loss to Sevilla. The Bela Guttman’s curse appeared superstitious. While some of the fans believed it, some have discarded it as false. However, there is a lesson from this historic event for you and I. Is this, a curse or a compensation for the decision and action of Benfica FC management at that time? Why would a man be denied his legitimate demand after having done so well? Rather than being dismissed, why have they not negotiated with him?
Without doubt, the club would have benefited financially from the honours Bela brought to the club. I want you to look inward and see where you have wrongfully denied others of the benefits they deserved.
To me, there is a law of immutable compensation in life. It is like a seed and harvest game. What we sow, we reap. Every effect has a cause. Every consequence has an antecedent. There must be perfect balance between the cause and effect, between the antecedent and consequence.
I know of one way out if your conscience identified someone you have denied a reward. It might not be affecting you as Bela’s superstitious or real curse on Benfica. All you need to do is to pray to God and do restitution is if it is practicable.
I am sure you will want to reap all you sow except the bad antecedents. Today’s deeds are tomorrow’s antecedents. To be respectful in your reaping, be selective in your sowing. Sow only seeds that will reward you peacefully. I want you to sow the remaining days of this year as seeds that will outlive you. The seed is your vision. Go for vision, not mere survival to produce quality results.
